The Heart of Ranch Life
There’s something about ranch life that begs to be photographed — the dust rising in the morning light, the rhythm of horses’ hooves, the smell of leather and sage, and the laughter that carries across the field as neighbors gather to help. Branding day is more than a chore; it’s a tradition. It’s when family and friends show up with rope, horses, and a whole lot of teamwork to get the job done. For lifelong ranchers in Downey, Idaho, it’s an essential part of their year — and one that deserves to be remembered.

Photographing a Family Tradition
When longtime family friends and neighbors invited me to photograph one of their brandings, I knew it would be special. This wasn’t a styled session or a staged setup — it was the real thing. Dust on boots, sweat on brows, horses circling, and kids running alongside their parents. There’s a raw, unpolished beauty to days like this, and that’s exactly what I wanted to capture through my lens: the grit, the connection, and the pride in carrying on a way of life that has been handed down for generations.

Capturing the Energy of the Day
Branding day moves quickly — cattle coming in, ropes flying, friends jumping in to lend a hand. In between all the movement are the moments that make it unforgettable: the smile exchanged between neighbors, the kids trying out their first rope throws, the calm strength of the horses, the bursts of laughter when something doesn’t quite go as planned. Every detail tells a story, and my goal was to preserve both the action and the heart behind it.

A Glimpse Into Ranch Life
For this Idaho family, ranching isn’t just an occupation; it’s a way of life. Their friends and neighbors don’t just show up to help — they show up because it’s who they are. There’s a beauty in watching generations work side by side, teaching, learning, and sharing in a tradition that connects them to the land and to each other. These photos aren’t just for the family who asked me to capture them — they’re a glimpse into a lifestyle that many never get to experience firsthand.

Why I Love Lifestyle Photography
For me, photography has always been about more than posed portraits. It’s about documenting stories, preserving traditions, and creating images that feel like real memories when you look back at them years later. Whether it’s a wedding, an elopement, or a ranch branding, I want my clients to have photos that remind them not just of how it looked, but of how it felt.

Your Story, Your Life
If you’re dreaming of photos that feel authentic — whether it’s your family on the ranch, your wedding in the Tetons, or a day-in-the-life session closer to home — I’d love to help you capture it. Your story deserves to be remembered in a way that feels true to you. [Reach out here] to start planning your own session.
